Plateau

Northwest of Marquette a series of logging roads lead to a plateau. We decided to give it a try, although with Art having had knee surgery in december and our general aversion to wiping out we decided if it was too difficult (which is to say, too much sand) we'd turn back. We got great directions and a copied map from an outfitter in Big Bay. She said the roads were a little rough but with the previous night's rain it would be a great day to do it. The rain keeps the dust down. On the map the last few miles were labelled "rough". It was almost 30 miles all told.

Motorcycles are very different from cars in terms of what is difficult. The rain did keep the dust down, but also made the occasional bit of sand or sandy pothole much more manageable. The big difficulty in sand is that the front tire can wash out, drifting out from underneath you and leading to all manner of disappointment. Wet sand is more stable.

There are extensive logged sections of the forest, it's neat to see different stages of regrowth. I don't really understand it all yet, to look at a section and see when and how it has been logged.

It was hard to ask for better, more beautiful riding.

As we came into a recently logged section, the road surface became drier, and that meant more loose sand. It was difficult to see where it was a little deep. Art got bit pretty well - this is after we righted the heavy bike, and he is letting me know how much he appreciates my efforts at documentation.

Tracing the tire tracks way back, it looks like he caught a bit of sand, which sent him a little right into another one, which almost was corrected, until he hit the heavy sand you can see in the picture. Nothing was broken on the bike or the rider, but Art was pretty beat up.
