Misty Mountain Morning

The last day of the trip started in Moorefield, WV. I knew I had a long day of riding ahead. After yesterdays snarl of traffic I was a bit underthrilled. Looking at a map, I had a somewhat straight shot by heading north and picking up the interstate an taking it all the way back to Chicago. According to google, this would be a 658 miles, 12.5 hours.

The alternative was to head west on route 50 through WV, a pretty major road that didn't appear to cross too many towns. It looked pretty squiggly on the map. Google claimed that just the shot west across WV to interstate 77 was 180 miles - and 5 hours. From there it would then be 516 miles more to Chicago, 10 hours.

So, the "easy" route is 650 miles, 12.5 hours, and the "hard" route is 700 miles, 15 hours. Its true that I can probably go faster than google time for short distances, however on a bike you stop more often for gas and to stretch and what not. Its hard to say how it would add up. Gaining an hour heading west, 15 hours would have been a cold 11:00 at night into Chicago. With cold rain likely the next day stopping somewhere would have only made it worse, so it had to be a straight shot.

Waking up to yesterday's Ponderosa morning, the fog and light had me in its grips and I struck out. Within just minutes I took the above picture. The route through WV proved to be one of the most beautiful rides I'd ever taken.

I got home around 10:00 PM CT - a bit cold but otherwise no worse for the wear. I enjoy taking my time and stopping for lots of pictures - but I also enjoy the sensation of begining and ending the day in completely different parts of the country - of only being off the bike for the briefest of times to keep moving. Its a wonderful challenge.

Film getting scanned and dev'd this week!

The Most Beautiful Shot that Wasn't

I came across this in WV. I was dumbfounded. I nearly got run over crossing the street. There was fog rolling off the mountains, the colors were clear and vivid, this farm with this ludicrously beautiful tree....

Alas, there was no way to get a good picture short of tresspassing. Normally I don't take pictures like that, enjoying the way some things are just there to be experienced and than lost to time. But this, I couldn't stop myself from clicking like a tourist.

This is staight out of the camera with some slight color correction....
